Getting Lowndes County Court Records
First figure out which office holds the file. The Lowndes County Circuit Clerk keeps the Circuit and District Court records. The Probate Judge holds estates and other statutory probate records. City ordinance cases live with the municipal clerks. So do qualifying municipal misdemeanors and traffic cases. Federal records belong to a federal clerk. Once you know who has custody, choose the easiest official channel that gives you the form of the record you need.
- Run a paid case-by-case search through Just One Look, or use Alacourt.com if valid subscription access fits the need.
- Confirm the Lowndes County court, case number, style, and precise docket entry title and date.
- Call the Circuit Clerk at (334) 548-2252 to ask about inspection, availability, current copy fees, payment, and turnaround.
- Inspect a public file or request a copy at 1 South Washington Street, Hayneville, during published weekday hours.
- Mail a precise request to P.O. Box 876, Hayneville, AL 36040, with contact details and a return envelope.
- When suitable, follow Alabama's written public-record request procedure, while recognizing that judiciary privacy rules still control court files.
- Use the dedicated Lowndes juvenile request and photo-identification process for an order when entitled to receive it.
Online access, phone routing, counter inspection, mail, and formal requests all complement each other. A statewide case display is informational only, and clerk certification is a separate official act.
Three Lowndes Court Record Layers
A search result is just the first layer. It locates a case through fields like court, number, style, type, filing date, and status. The second layer is the docket, or case action summary. It indexes filings, orders, settings, and disposition in order. The third layer is the real thing. That is the complaint, motion, order, judgment, transcript-related filing, or certified copy itself.
| Layer | What it gives | Where to seek it |
|---|---|---|
| Case result | Locator and broad status | Just One Look or Alacourt |
| Docket details | Chronological event index | State product or clerk file |
| Filed record | Actual document or certified copy | Authorized image access or clerk |
The official Alabama electronic court products page separates filing, clerk processing, subscription records, and on-demand access.
The product names sound alike, but each one serves a different step. AlaFile files and serves documents; it is not the ordinary public record search.
Court Record Types
Lowndes County court records can include the papers that open a case, the filings parties make later, court notices, and the judge's rulings. A docket entry helps you pin down the document by date and title. Asking for the whole file may be slower, broader, and costlier than asking for two named entries.
- complaints, statements of claim, petitions, and indictments;
- summonses, subpoenas, warrants, service returns, and arrest returns;
- answers, motions, briefs, and supporting materials;
- hearing notices, setting notices, orders, judgments, and sentencing records;
- public financial, enforcement, satisfaction, appeal, and record-transmission entries.
Domestic-relations and child-support records run through the Circuit Clerk's divisions, but sensitive content may stay closed. Probate estates and guardianships are not ordinary Circuit Clerk civil files. Run the case search and identify the docket entry before requesting any document.
Lowndes Court Record Clerk
Stephanie Jones is named on the official Lowndes County Circuit Clerk page as record keeper and business manager. Her work covers Circuit and District Court proceedings. Her office receives pleadings, images records, issues subpoenas and hearing notices, and collects court funds. It also runs divisions for civil, criminal, domestic, child support, traffic, juvenile, warrants, and related work. Everything sits under one roof. There is no separate district clerk for one trial level and county clerk for another.

The official Lowndes County court site posts the courthouse contact and office hours. Ask two questions first. Can the public file be inspected? Is the page you want electronically imaged? Staff can explain custody, procedure, availability, and copy options. They cannot interpret a ruling, predict an outcome, or advise which document proves a legal claim.
Note: Bring or state the case number, court division, document title, filing date, and requested copy type at the clerk counter.
Inside a Lowndes County Court Record
What's inside depends on case type and access level. A criminal file can show allegations, bond events, hearings, pleas, orders, disposition, and sentence. A civil file can show the complaint, service, answer, motions, settings, judgment, and post-judgment process. The public docket may name a record even when its image is unavailable. Access can differ.
| Header | Lowndes County court, division, case number, style, filing date, judge, and status. |
|---|---|
| Parties and counsel | Public party roles and attorneys of record where available. |
| Claims or charges | Broad allegations or classifications, not a final outcome. |
| Chronology | Filed events, service, motions, notices, hearings, orders, and appeal steps. |
| Settings | Date, time, type, court, and later continuance or reset history. |
| Disposition | Judgment, dismissal, plea, verdict, sentence, transfer, or other recorded result. |
| Financial entries | Public costs, payments, balances, collection, or satisfaction when recorded. |
A label on the Lowndes County docket tells you little on its own. When the actual terms matter, ask the clerk for the filed order or judgment.
Write a Locatable Lowndes Request
A precise request cuts the risk of pulling the wrong case or getting the wrong document. Name the Lowndes County Circuit Clerk and the division. Then supply the case number, style, record title, and date. Skip unnecessary sensitive identifiers. Say whether you want inspection, a plain copy, or a certified copy.
| Request field | What to provide | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Custodian and division | Circuit Clerk plus civil, criminal, traffic, or other unit | Routes the request |
| Case identity | Number, style, type, approximate date | Prevents a wrong match |
| Record sought | Entry title and filing date | Defines the page or filing |
| Copy choice | Inspection, plain, or certified | Sets the product and possible fee |
| Delivery details | Phone, mailing address, return envelope | Supports follow-up and return |
The Alabama statutory form also asks for the agency, the request date, a specific description, and a certification of Alabama residency or standing. Vague, overly broad, unreasonable, nonexistent, or nonpublic requests need not be filled under the documented procedure.
Fees and Certified Copies
The official local pages post no complete clerk copy-fee schedule for Lowndes County. Do not borrow another Alabama county's prices. Call (334) 548-2252 before sending payment. Ask for the current amount, accepted payment form, availability, and turnaround. Filing costs and traffic penalties do not prove a court-record copy fee. A Lowndes fee sheet can list them anyway.
| Record product | Published Lowndes amount | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Plain clerk copy | Not located | Confirm with Circuit Clerk |
| Certified clerk copy | Not located | Confirm certification and fee |
| Archived or microfilm search | Not located | Ask about staff research |
| Just One Look access | Fee required; current amount not captured | Check official product |
| Alacourt subscription | Current price not located | Check provider or call 1-877-799-9898 |
A certified copy bears the clerk's authentication and suits a need for an official reproduction. A plain copy is not the same product. Ask the receiving office what it requires before paying for certification.
Electronic Lowndes Records Have Limits
Lowndes County court records are imaged electronically, the clerk says. That promise has limits, though. Alacourt.com offers case details and images through a read-only subscription, while Just One Look sells access one case at a time. None of that makes every page public. Sealing orders, juvenile confidentiality, privacy rules, and document-level restrictions still decide who sees what.
The Alabama rules library publishes the court rules that govern access.
A public docket may show that an order was entered yet hold back the image or the sensitive text. A gap is not a dead end. Before assuming the worst, ask the clerk whether the file is restricted, too old, or sitting with another court.
Sealed Records and Public Access
Alabama law gives residents a route to public writings. Alabama Code Sections 36-12-40 through 36-12-45 set out that access, the lawful copy fees, and the written request procedure. Court records also answer to the Alabama Rules of Court-Record Privacy and Confidentiality. Those rules took effect January 1, 2025. Rule 301 sets a high bar for sealing. A record can be sealed only after a motion, a hearing, and case-specific findings. After that, the record stays closed to the public unless a court order says otherwise.
Public does not mean unrestricted. Juvenile matters, adoptions, sensitive family material, sealed files, and protected identifiers may be withheld in whole or in part.
Alabama Rule of Civil Procedure 5.1 makes the filer responsible for truncating Social Security, taxpayer-identification, and financial-account numbers in ordinary filings.
The official Alabama legislation text lays out the written request procedure itself, step by step.
If the clerk turns you away, ask which rule applies and whether a court order could change the answer. A missing portal image proves nothing. The document or the case may still exist even when the screen shows a blank.
Federal Records Use Another Clerk
Federal cases tied to Lowndes County are not in the Circuit Clerk's state trial record. They are filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. Appeals go to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. For those, use the PACER Case Locator or the Middle District CM/ECF system.
PACER asks you to register an account and bills under federal rules. Check the official PACER service for current rates instead of trusting an old figure. A federal docket entry lists its entry number and the filing date. It also carries a description and links to any open documents. Sealed items stay out of reach. Certified federal copies come from the federal clerk, never from the Lowndes County Circuit Clerk.
